General Football Tips (04-06/05/13)

All That Matters Is Survival...

I started this blog to test whether it's better to bet with your head or your heart and so far this season my general football tips have performed with a clear advantage over my Toon tips.  Our disappointing results have meant that at times I've been overly optimistic when backing The Toon.

On the other hand a few months ago my general football tips went on a run of seven successive profitable weeks and then followed this up more recently with another run of seven out of eight profitable weeks, so I would have to conclude that it's definitely wiser to bet with your head rather than your heart.

However, that's possibly in part down to the inconsistent season we've had and I suspect that Man United fans (and Reading and QPR fans if they were being objective) would probably have found their own teams' results easier to predict.

Anyway, as I mentioned in my last post, as we head into the final three games of the season, all that matters is survival so for the remainder of the season I'm going to forget about looking for potentially appealing Toon bets.  Instead I'll simply pick out the odds for the most popular Toon betting markets and then follow this up with a few general football bets...

Toon Odds:

After the performance against Liverpool it's hard to be overly confident about us getting anything from this one, but if we're looking for signs for optimism then West Ham have nothing to play for.  However, you can guarantee that Sam Allardyce will want to prove a point to Mike Ashley so he's bound to get his team fired up.

SkyBet make West Ham the favourites with the 'Match Result' odds as follows:
West Ham - 2.25
Draw - 3.3
Newcastle - 3.2

SkyBet have former players Carroll and Nolan as the favourites in the various 'Goalscorer' markets:

First Goalscorer To Score In 90 Mins Hat-Trick
Andy Carroll 5.5 2.25 34
Kevin Nolan 7.5 2.88 51
Papiss Cisse 8 3 67
Carlton Cole 8 3 67
Shola Ameobi 9 3.5 81
Hatem Ben Arfa 9 3.5 81
Yoan Gouffran 10 4 101
Joe Cole 10 4 101
Yohan Cabaye 11 4.5 126
Moussa Sissoko 12 5 151

And here are the odds for a selection of bets which would be very welcome outcomes:
First Team To Score: Newcastle - 2.1
Newcastle To Win Either Half - 2.0
Newcastle To Score In First 10 Minutes - 8.0
Newcastle To Win And Both Teams To Score - 5.5

Finally, just as a matter of curiosity, the odds for us to reverse the Liverpool scoreline and win 6-0 are 250/1.
